How many times is God referred to as an angel in the Bible?

God the Father is nowhere referred to as an Angel in Biblical accounts, however, Jesus is referred to as a Mighty Angel by John in Revelation. The opening of Revelation states that an Angel of the Lord was revealing the vision to John.

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.” Revelation 1:1–2

“And I saw another mighty Angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire” Revelation 10:1

As the vision progresses, It starts out with God giving a vision to Jesus, who in turn shares this vision with an Angel who Jesus instructs to share that vision to John (Rev. 1:1–2) Later in the vision John says he saw “another mighty angel” but this second Angel is Jesus Himself who is speaking to John.

Despite John’s attribution of it being an Angel, Jesus makes several comments that makes the distinction for John to know who is speaking to him. According to Biblical accounts, Angels don’t sit on thrones, Jesus is described in judgment as having feet like fine brass (Rev. 2:18, Rev 1:13–16), feet like pillars of fire is as fine brass (Rev 10:1), rainbow around his throne, rainbow around His head (Rev. 4:3, Rev.10:1), face like the sun (Rev. 10:1), Jesus was a prophet (Luke 24:19), He was God’s servant (John 8:29) Alpha Omega beginning and the end, first and the last is also a designation for Jesus.

The rainbow upon His head is symbolic of God’s covenant with man and the earth (Genesis 9:9–13). The significance of the bow’s association with Christ is that Jesus represents mankind. His sacrifice will never happen again, (first and the last) as Gods promise to never destroy the planet again with water will never happen again (Hebrews 10:11–14, 26).

The rainbow is type and shadow of Gods promise, which was associated with Christ as the promise of the redemption of man, which God made to Adam. This is depicted in the sacrifice of Cain and Able. Cain killed Able because God accepted Able’s sacrifice over Cain’s, the point of them giving sacrifices in the first place, was to show the sacrifice of the Messiah who was come. This was instituted by God from the time of Adam after his sin, otherwise there is no way that Cain and Able would have ever known about sacrifices or their significance (Genesis 4:3–10).

The secret of the Mighty Angel is in the attribution given of Him.

“And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;” Revelation 2:18

“And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.” Revelation 1:13–16

Another account is in Revelation 22: “And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book. And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”Revelation 22:1–16

“And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.” Revelation 4:2–4

This is Jesus on the throne…Angels don’t sit in thrones…
